Magwa Falls by Destiny Cottage in Mbotyi: For visitors staying at Destiny Cottage in Mbotyi, Magwa Falls makes an excellent day trip and is less than an hour’s drive away through some of the most scenic countryside on the Wild Coast.

Magwa Falls is one of the most spectacular waterfalls on the Wild Coast of the Eastern Cape. Located near Lusikisiki, the falls plunge about 142–144 metres into a deep gorge, making them among the highest waterfalls in South Africa.

The falls lie within the historic Magwa Tea Estate, once one of the largest tea plantations in South Africa and now the country’s last remaining tea estate. The plantation was established during the twentieth century and became an important source of employment and economic activity in the Pondoland region.

On your way to Magwa Falls, you’ll travel through a magnificent avenue of towering old turpentine gum trees. Their majestic presence and towering canopies create a memorable journey, adding to the magic and beauty of this spectacular Wild Coast destination.”

Geologically, Magwa Falls owes its dramatic appearance to a narrow canyon formed by ancient seismic activity and faulting. The river suddenly plunges over the edge of a plateau into the gorge below, creating a spectacular curtain of water, especially after heavy rains.

The area forms part of the beautiful Pondoland section of the Wild Coast, rich in Xhosa history, traditional culture, forests, rivers and waterfalls. Although Magwa Falls has long been known to local communities, it has become increasingly popular with visitors exploring the route between Port St Johns, Mbotyi and Lusikisiki.
