The Grosvenor Wreck – The Wild Coast’s Lost Treasure

On 4 August 1782, the British East Indiaman Grosvenor, sailing from India to England, was wrecked on the remote Pondoland coast near what later became Port Grosvenor.

Many of those aboard survived the wreck, only to face an arduous journey overland in search of help. But it was what the ship may have left behind that would fuel more than two centuries of speculation.

The Mystery of the Lost Treasure

Over the centuries, the Grosvenor became famous for another reason — treasure.

Stories spread that the ship had been carrying valuable coins, silver, gold and precious jewels. More extravagant legends even connected the wreck with the famous Peacock Throne of India, although there is no reliable evidence that it was aboard.

The possibility of treasure attracted numerous salvage expeditions to this isolated part of the Wild Coast.

Perhaps the most extraordinary reminder of these attempts is the hole and tunnel dug into the rock near the wreck site. Treasure hunters tried to tunnel toward the wreck from the land, hoping to reach riches believed to be trapped beneath the rocks and sea.

Over the years, explosives, pumps and other ambitious methods were also used in attempts to recover the Grosvenor’s supposed fortune.

Yet the legendary treasure was never found.
